This week the Riverside Writers Creative Writing Group will feature a workshop from Seamus Kelly, titled “Taking Flight”.

The initial ideas came from time spent in the last week or so watching fledgling starlings taking flight – sometimes there is lots of tentative flapping of wings, sometimes running back and forth and somewhere along the line there is always the great leap of faith into that very first flight.

We watched parents place food on the ground to entice the little ones to take flight like human parents hold out their hands and speak words of encouragement to babies to take their first tentative steps.

With something of a fear of heights I don’t think I could be a starling.

As always anyone aged 18+ is very welcome to our free sessions and there is no need to book.

There is lots going on in the next few weeks so here is a little summary:

Poster for Folk Like Us Event

Saturday 31st May – Folk Like Us – a free celebratory event at Rochdale Town Hall from 10am to 4pm. Riverside Writers will be leading poetic Room Ramble and Rhyme Tours at 11am and 1pm. We will also lead two writing workshops, one for children with Ray Stearn and one for adults with Seamus Kelly. The day will also feature Littleborough’s U3A choir, Littleborough Brass Band, the Edwin Waugh Society and an organ recital by Barrie Brailsford.

Flyer for Poetry Café event on 3rd June

Tuesday 3rd June – 6pm to 8pm – Poetry Café – a monthly open mic style event takes place at Coffee on the Corner in Littleborough. There will be a great mix of poetry and excellent hot drinks and homemade cakes available from the café. You are welcome to come along to read or perform some of your poetry or the watch, listen and enjoy the evening.

Saturday 28th June – 10am to 4pm – An inspiring day of poetry writing, performance and discussion at Hare Hill House in Littleborough. The morning features two workshops – Poetry in Nature by Seamus Kelly, and Contemprary Poetry by Becky May from 10am to 12noon, followed by performances from 12noon to 1pm. Finally from 2 to 4pm Seamus will be hosting a discussion with Gaia Holmes about her poetry and her recent book of short stories “He Used to do Dangerous Things”. There is a £5 charge for this event, which includes refreshments, and places can be reserved by emailing lizwhitecreative@gmail.com, please specify which workshop you would like to attend.
