At Riverside Writers this week Seamus Kelly will lead a workshop introducing some of the ways in which poets can structure their work.
It might sometimes seem that Free Verse has no structure at all and other forms like Sonnets, Odes or Villanelles seem to be overloaded with “rules”. Of course poetry is an art form and the artist (poet) has a vast range of tools available to them to create the work in words that best matches the thoughts and emotions in their minds. Bear in mind that Leonardo DaVinci didn’t use just a single brush for his paintings, or a single pen for his drawings – all the great artists made use of the tools they felt best suited to the work they were creating.
If you were “told” about this stuff in school it might have seemed dry and not very useful to you, but on Thursday morning we aren’t in school – we will have examples, inspiration and fun and we will create new writing using the tools we choose to use.
OPEN MIC AT BULL ON THE BROW – SUNDAY 14TH – 7PM ONWARDS
The new space at The Bull on the Brow, just off The Butts in Rochdale, is the new venue for an open mic session. The venue has been opened by the proprietor of Viccolo del Vino and can be accessed from there or through its own entrance. Initially these sessions will take place every three months and we welcome poets and musicians.
We hope to see and hear plenty of our local verbal and musical artists on Sunday.
